I'm Made Surya, professional bird guide in Bali and Eastern Java. I was born in Bali Barat where the National Park existed. Study Economic science as the accountant on Undiknas University of Denpasar until 1998. I was an accountant and hotel supplier ( for kitchen and laundry equipment ). In 2005 back to West Bali and have a chance to be trained by Bali Barat National Park as a professional birdwatching guide. Birdwatching, birding photography and wildlife is my passion.

We booked him now for the 2nd time after a first fantastic birding day in 2020 (before Covid)
Made knows everything about Bali‘s birds and where to find the best spots to look for them.
Made is well organized and well equipped with telescope, tripod, and has all the birds’ voices on his phone to eventually call them.
Although he was well booked he could offer us a tailored trip within only 2 days notice including picking us up from our hotel.
He drove us by car to different spots , sometimes even watching out of the car. This is less strenuous and much more efficient. We saw within 3 hours a large variery of birds. Full recommendation! P+ J from Germany

Everyday, Made planned a new adventure for our family. He guided us through his own backyard, exploring the jungles of the West Bali National Park. He guided us to the places he explored since his own childhood. His enthusiasm and joy were contagious. He magically revealed to us the bright flashing purple and blue feathers of the Javan Kingfisher, the sparkling blue feathers of the Cerrulean Kingfisher, and many more endemic species. He trekked along with his high powered scope so we could see these beautiful birds as though they were inches away. He has spent years listening to their calls, tracking their favorite hangouts at different parts of the year, so he holds the keys to open the door to these rare bird sightings.
How could our adventure get better than that? It did. Every day Made showed us new wonderful places. He took us to the island of Java. We explored Baluran National Park. We trekked through the mangrove jungles, surprised as a herd of wild boar suddenly raced by in front of us. The baby boars stuck close to their mommas but the large male boars briefly stopped to eye us with curiosity. We saw water buffaloes relaxing in their watering holes in Java’s savannah, as they mingled with herds of Menjangan deer and families of monkeys seeking refuge by the cool water. Our daughters swung on the rope swing on the white sand Javan beach.
Everyday of our stay revealed a new adventure, and more to learn about the delightful Balinese people and creatures. Made took us to a turtle conservatory to learn about local conservation efforts. With the turtle conservatory guide and Made, our family had a chance to help release baby turtles back to the sea.
Made taught us to never stop listening. Look up. The true beauty of the Indonesian islands is up in the trees. It is the birds. With his scope and high powered binoculars, Made unvealed these hidden gems of the islands for our family.
As a mom, I was worried about dangers trekking through these wild jungles. Made looked out for us every step of the way. He took us under his wing. Our family could not have done this trip on our own. Made knows the land. He knows the variety of cultures. He knows the languages. He knows the people. He knows the creatures. He grew up exploring these lands, he helped us mitigate risk, exercise appropriate caution, but also see the beauty of the true Bali. He taught us that the Balinese have a history of resilience, overcoming differences, and working together with many different people to unite and thrive together. These are lessons we hope to remember forever.
It was a trip of a lifetime. Thanks to Made, his lovely parents, and the entire village of Blimbingsari who welcomed us with warmth and friendship.
