My husband and I spent 3 days birding with Made Surya. The experience far exceeded my expectations! As this was my first visit to Bali, just about all the birds were lifers. Made took us to a variety of habitats so as to maximize the different birds that were possible to see. We saw 83 species over the 3 days, including the Bali myna, a must-see for any serious birder. Made is extremely expert at what he does, and is professional and patient (both with the birds and with the birders!). He was amazing at finding birds, and then getting them in the spotting scope. I've been on a number of guided bird excursions in the U.S., and he ranks right up there with the best of them. I could not have asked for a better guide!

I spent a day with Made in August 2023. I had an absurdly large list of target lifers—27 in total, some of which were difficult—but in about ten hours we found and had good looks at 21 of them, and I had good locations for the ones we missed (four of which I saw the next day at the same location he had taken me to). Made is knowledgeable, friendly, determined, and patient; in short, an excellent guide. Highlights for the day were numerous, but included: multiple views of Bali Myna, including one that came down to eye-level to check us out; good looks at Javan Banded Pitta and Sunda Scops-Owl in the forest tract behind Made's home; excellent looks at the Ruby-throated Bulbul, Small Blue Kingfisher, and many other wonderful birds. What a day!

We had an afternoon trip with Made and it was great! It was our first time bird watching, but Made made it very easy and intuitive for us
We have been in several bird habitats and seen some beautiful and colorful birds. Made gave us all we need to watch birds and also he did set up the tube for making photos.
The car was A/C'd and had bottled water.
It was overall a great experience, highly recommend to everyone who likes birds!

Made is an excellent guide. He made our 2 day birding trip both productive and fun. My wife and I were able to tally 71 species and 36 lifers. Not bad for 2 days. Cathy and I enjoy birding where we not only identify the bird, but “get good looks” That happened consistently throughout our 2 days. Made had the patience to make sure that my wife and I didn’t miss any target birds. Driving around with Made was also fun. Made has a great sense of humor and that guaranteed a good ride from the desired birding hotspots. If we had stayed longer we would have considered Made’s 4 day birding trip to Eastern Java and Bali, but we already had other plans. All in all Made is a great guy, knowledgeable birder and a good companion. I would definitely recommend him to anyone contemplating a trip to Bali

Birding West Bali National Park and surrounds - Trip Report

West Bali National Park 2019 May 8th by Russel from Australia  When my lovely wife, Sue, informed me that she wanted to travel to Bali to take part in a ceramics workshop in Ubud I was delighted as we had never visited Bali before and I knew that it would be a fantastic opportunity for me to do some tropical birding whilst Sue was potting. I started searching the internet to find a guide or tour that would suit my itinerary, skill level and budget. I came across a blog site called Birding Tours i n Bali by Made Surya based in West Bali. I read the reports and comments and sent Made an email letting him know my schedule, interest and budget. Within a day Made responded with a terrific plan and itinerary that would achieve my goal of seeing and photographing as many Bali bird species as possible, with some key species targeted, namely the Javan Banded Pitta and the Bali Starling .
